Mexico’s Michoacán state has long been known for its avocado production, but its berry harvest is now one of the most important in Mexico, local daily Cambio de Michoacán reported.

Strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are all planted in the region. In the case of the strawberry, Michoacán is home to 63.2% of the harvested fruit in all of  Mexico.

According to the report, there are more than 2,700 small growers in the region, and for strawberry alone more than 10,000 hectares are currently planted. Blackberries are also growing in importance, and have grown to match strawberries, even though the fruit was introduced to the region only in 2003.

The focus on berry growing has made it the natural home for Mexico’s berry industry in general, which just wrapped up its second international conference last week.
