Mexico avocados represent 65% of week 44 sales in U.S.

Avocados from Michoacán, Mexico, accounted for 65% of sales in the U.S. during week 44, Mexican avocado news site infohass.net reported.

The Mexican fruit held strong while the rest of the week’s sales came from California (25%) and Chile (10%). The trend towards Mexico will likely continue since the California harvest is now ending.

Mexico’s main competitor in the U.S. market is now Chile, which has seen a large drop in exports to the U.S. due to a strong local market, weak dollar and smaller harvest, FreshFruitPortal.com previously reported.

Prices in the U.S. market have declined slightly over the last week, with California posting the largest drop per box of US$ 1.39 per carton. Comparative figures were not provided. Sales are expected to be strong as promotional campaigns for the year’s end start to pick up.
