Peru avocado shipments up 24.6% through October 2010 on US demand

The volume of Peruvian avocado exports between January and October of this year reached 59,400 metric tons (MT) a 24.6% increase compared to the same period last year, Peruvian news agency Andina reported.

Citing numbers from economy and export consulting firm Maximixe, the report said the total value of exports has increased by 24.6% to reach US $82.5 million. The increase is a result of more receiving markets, principally the United States which started receiving Peruvian avocado in July of this year.

Moreover exports to traditional destinations also picked up. Volume to Spain grew 51.6%, France 21.1%, The Netherlands picked up 11.6% and shipments to the UK increased 7.7%.

A total of 75 companies are now exporting the Peruvian fruit. The field is led by Camposol, with a 18.9% share of the export volume, followed by Consorcio de Productores de Fruta (17.5%), Agroindustrias Verdeflor (6.7%) and Sociedad AgrĆcola Drokasa (5.8%).

Furthermore the reported credited favorable weather conditions for a high quality yield this year, which has also helped the positioning of Peruā€™s avocados with foreign receivers.
