Exports of Uruguayan citrus have reached 315,000 metric tons (MT), an increase of 17% over exports in 2009, according to a statement on the website of Argentina based Tucuman Citrus Association.

The results, gathered through a survey taken in November called ā€œPrimavera 2010ā€ (Spring 2010) were online with previous estimates gathered in May of this year.

Oranges, the main export for Uruguay, reached a production level of 154,000 MT of export crop, 24,000 tons more than in 2009. In the case of Mandarin some 121,000 MT was recorded, 29,000 more than last year.

For lemons and grapefruit, production reached 38,000 and 2,000 MT, respectively. This means a drop in production, although figures from 2009 were not published.

The Uruguayan fruit industry has focused on citrus as a way of diversifying its export crop in terms of new fruit varieties and new markets. The industry has its sights set on entering the US in 2011.
