Mexico papaya shipments to the U.S. worth US $54.6 million in 2010

Exports of Mexican papaya to the U.S. reached 95,000 tons for a value of US $54.6 million between January and August, an increase of 4.5% compared to the previous year, Mexicoā€™s ministry of agriculture, SAGARPA, said in a statement.

SAGARPA attributes the growth to promotional campaigns and participation in trade shows as the government looks to increase consumption of the fruit in the U.S. market. Canada has also been targeted with promotional campaigns.

The growth amounted to some US $4 million in more sales of the fruit in U.S. retail channels.

The campaign participated in trade shows in Miami and Boston in order to promote the quality of the Mexican fruit.
