Peru's frozen strawberry exports rise 155%

Peruvian customs figures show the country's strawberry exports in the first two months of the year rose 155.4% compared to the same period in 2010, with a volume of 974.5 metric tons (MT), reported Agraria.pe.

The story reported the frozen strawberries were worth US$1.3 million, with the U.S. as the largest market representing 30.2% of total volumes, followed by Belgium (18.4%), Canada (14.7%), Japan (10,9%) and Germany (10.6%).

But while the frozen strawberry industry recorded an overall rise in volumes, growth figures to different markets varied, with sharp growth to the U.S. and Belgium of 253.9% and 197.3% respectively, while shipments to Canada fellĀ  16.4%. Meanwhile, sales to Japan and Germany rose 1008.9% and 163.3% respectively, the story reported.

The major companies involved with frozen strawberry sales were Agroworld S.A.C. and Mebol S.R. Ltda, representing 86.1% of total exports.
