Pests and rain hit Honduran banana crops

Black Sigatoka disease and adverse weather conditions led to a 5.3% year-on-year fall in Honduran banana production in April, website Latribuna.hn reported.

Statistics released by the Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) showed banana production grew 24.6% during the same period in 2010.

Total agricultural exports fell 2.9% in April, compared to a 5.7% rise during the same period in 2010, the story reported.

The country's coffee production grew 4.2%, driven by increased demand in Europe and the U.S., according to the Honduran Central Bank (BCH).

Despite the fall in banana production, high international prices will still likely push up export values for Honduran exporters.
