Mexico's citrus exports rose 15% year-on-year to US$124.12 million during the first five months of 2011, with the strongest growth registered for Persian limes.

The country's Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA), announced 151,116 metric tons (MT) worth of citrus fruits were exported during the period.

SAGARPA did not reveal the exact figures for Persian limes, but earlier this month reported shipments grew 52.5% to US$98 million during the first four months of the year.

From January to May, the central American nation registered a 2% year-on-year growth for mandarin shipments to US$609,000.

While shipment have been boosted by around US$16 million so far this year, growth is still lower than in 2010 when citrus exports rose 26% to US$261.67 million.

Last year Mexico recorded 109% growth for grapefruit exports, lime shipments grew 62%, while other lime and lemon varieties exports rose 37%.
