Fruit fly spreading in Mozambique

A fruit fly outbreak in Mozambique has now spread to three more provinces including the important port region of Maputo, media agency Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique reported.

The original pest was found in the central province of Manica, and despite a fruit transport ban it has spread to Inhambane, Gaza and Maputo.

Maputo is the province that hosts the port of the same name, which is often used by South African fruit exporters when Durban is close to full capacity.

Agriculture Ministry economics director Victorino Xavier, told local newspaper Noticias the fruit fly was not just a threat to southern Mozambique but the Southern African Development Community (SADC), where Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola have been the worst hit.

The story reported the province of Manica had great potential for fruit exports with mangoes, oranges, tangerines and bananas, but exports have been provisionally banned for a year, depending on when it can be free of the pest.

Xavier also told the newspaper that Mozambique had issues with coconut lethal yellowing disease and mildew on cashew trees.
