More NZ apples going to juice market

New Zealand company Enza Foods has opened up a new processing line in Hastings following increased demand for apple juice concentrates, Radio New Zealand reported.

General manager Jon Marks said grow-to-process contracts ranged from NZ$8,000-10,000 (US$6,304-7,880) per hectare, making some varieties profitable when they were making losses in the international fresh apple market.

Pipfruit New Zealand chairman Ian Palmer told the radio program the industry was still export-focused with two thirds of production shipped overseas, but producing some process-grade apples was a good way to de-risk.

"It takes the risk of exchange rate variability from the international market out of the equation, and you know what your income is going to be," he was quoted as saying.
