Mexico ready for Japanese mango protocols

Mexico is ready to comply with Japan's new mango importer protocols providing buyers continue to foot the bill, website Provincia.com.mx reported.

Mango Production president  Xavier Chávez Contreras, said Japan has been paying for the small export fee under the Japan-Mexico Economic Partnership agreement since 2005.

"Each year we review the export protocol with each country to see how we can cut handling time, manage ripeness and find out when and how much they want," he was reported as saying.

Each producer receives more than MXN$2000 (US$146) per metric ton (MT) shipped to Japan. There are currently 4,000 producers and 20 packers who export to  U.S., Canada and Japan.

It's estimated 40% of Japan's mango imports come from Mexico, but compared with U.S. import volumes this is relatively small.
