Peruvian banana industry sees Cavendish spike

Peru's Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG) has announced the country's Cavendish banana export values rose 19% year-on-year to US$36 million between January and July, website Andina.com.pe reported.

The values rose roughly in line with an 18.6% year-on-year rise in volumes to 57,000 metric tons (MT), while the yearly average since 2005 has been 13%.

Corporación Peruana de Desarrollo Bananero is the largest exporter of the fruit with 26% of the total, followed by Central Piurana de Asociaciones de Pequeños Productores de Banano Orgánico (15%), Asociación de Pequeños Productores de Banano Orgánico de Saman y Anexos  (12%) and Bio Costa Sociedad Anónima Cerrada (12%).

The story reported the Netherlands was the largest buyer at 54.9%, followed by the U.S. (22.7%), Japan (10%), Belgium (5.8%) and Germany (2.6%).
