Mexico's avocado exports rising by a quarter annually
Mexico's avocado exports over the last decade have grown by 25% a year to US$672 million in 2010, according to the United Nations´Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
So far sales this year, including September, have reached $US642.4 million - Â a 44% year-on-year increase.
Agricultural development secretary Ernesto Fernández Arias, said the country was the largest avocado exporter in the world accounting for 39% of sales internationally exporting principally to the U.S., Canada and Japan.
He added that between 2006 and 2010, sales of Mexican avocados to the U.S. grew by more than 80%.
"The national production of avocados in the last 10 years has shown positive results, the sum total of production exceeded 10 million metric tons (MT) with an average annual growth of 2%," he said.
In addition, he said, in the last decade the avocado harvested area grew on average 2.7%Â annually, from 94,000 hectares in 2000 to 123,000 hectares in 2010.
He explained that avocado production stood at around 1.1 MT in 2010 with Michoacán accounting for 80% of production.
