Mexican region aims to raise organic mango exports

The organic mango industry in Mexico's Tierra Caliente region aims to increase its planted area by 300% this year, website Vozdemichoacan.com.mx reported.

The story reported the region, in the state of Michoacán, was the most important in Mexico for the U.S. export-oriented fruit.

Michoacán State Mango Producers Board president Xavier Chávez Contreras, told the website producer organization strategies still needed to be made, while the industry would seek more foreign buyers in 2012.

He said the state's mango plantation area would rise to 2,000ha, but the area needed to meet consumer demand would be between 5,000ha-6,000ha, the story reported.

He told the website the industry had the potential to send three or four shipments per day, which was between 800,000 and 1 million cases, triggering a need to find new market channels.
