The South African Fresh Produce Exporters' Forum (FPEF) has announced Anton Kruger will begin as CEO on Mar. 1.

Outgoing CEO Stuart Symington said Kruger hailed from the ostrich industry where he currently heads up the SA Ostrich Business Chamber.

"He is very familiar with industry matters that are common to all agricultural sectors," said Symington.

"We wish him well in his new position, and have no doubt that he will bring a wealth of experience and ideas to the Forum."

Elsewhere in South Africa, the country had shipped 26,485,634 cartons of grapes in the season to week 4, according to the South African Table Grape Industry (SATI).

The volume represents a 17.9% year-on-year rise on the previous season, but is still lower than the 28,889,163 during the period in 2009-10.

SATI reported hot and dry weather in the Northern Provinces has led to excellent fruit quality this season, with volumes expected until week 7. Meanwhile, the Orange River region has also had good quality and was expected to finish harvesting on Saturday (Feb. 4).

Yields per hectare have been higher in the Olifants River region, while Berg River has seen an improved packing tempo due to mild and dry weather.

Variable climatic conditions in the Hex River Valley have meant a slow accumulation of sugar for some varieties, with a packing tempo below average.
