Strong winds of 95-120 kilometers (59-75 miles) per hour have hit some of Mexico's key mango-exporting areas, website Noticiasnet.mx reported.

Growers claim up to 18,000 hectares of mango plantations in Chahuites, Santo Domingo Zanatepec, San Pedro Tapanatepec, IxhuatƔn andReforma de Pineda municipalities, have been affected.

Producer representative Julio CĆ©sar Urbieta Salinas told the website a succession of strong winds for the last few days meant Tommy and Ataulfo varitiesĀ had fallen off branches.

"Before we were harvesting 2,000 boxes per hectare but now with this disaster we won't even reach 200. The future isn't looking good," he was quoted as saying.

He said the adverse weather put 1000 producers in a difficult situation where they may not be able to meet their credit commitments of some MXN100 million (US$ 7.87 million) borrowed from lender Financiera Rural.
