Plans for a new KES500 million (US$6 million) Kenyan fruit processing plant targeting Europe and the Middle EastĀ are in the pipline, website Businessdailyafrica.com reported.

Transaction Link International executive director David Ndiema, confirmed his company had applied to the Kenya Investment Authority for a tax deduction payment certificate.

The factory will be financed through loans from Kenya's Diamond Trust Bank and from Italian food processing firm Bertuzi Food.

He said the company has identified a block of 1.3 acres of land in Eldoret municipality, in west Kenya, valued at Sh30 million (US$361,228).

The project also involves developing a commercial nursery for breeding quality seeds and growing grafted purple passion fruits on yellow seedlings for 12,000 farmers.

"It is now 13 months since we started working on the passion fruit incubator project," Ndiema was quoted as saying.

He added the company has plans to expand to the rest of East Africa and South Sudan by 2017.

There are two commercially viable varieties of passion fruits, the yellow and purple fruit.Ā The yellow cultivar is predominant while the purple passion fruit is only grown in small quantities around the world.
