South African growers’ group launches deciduous fruit training videos
Emerging South African apple and pear farmers and new workers will have access to online training on everything from soil preparation to harvesting, thanks to a series of videos produced by growers’ body Hortgro.
Hortgro corporate services and communication manager Retha Louw, said eight initial movies would be available with new ones added every month.
“We believe they (growers) will show it to the seasonal and new workers on the farm and it will give them a quick training and it will be especially useful for up and coming farmers.”
There are currently eight movies covering irrigation, harvesting, insect and pest control, soil preparation and hand thinning which can be viewed on saorchard.co.za.
Hortgro commissioned GM Television in Cape Town to produce the website on behalf of the South African Apple and Pear Association and the South African Stone Fruit Producers.
There will be 26 movies planned for the first year, new movies will be added monthly. In May, pruning and trellising program will be filmed and posted to the site in June.
