Peru sees Camu-camu exports soar thanks to U.S. demand

Peru's Camu-camu exports increased by 105.4% to reach US$645,685 last year from January to August 2011, website Alertaeconomica.com reported.

The dramatic rise was fuelled by growing U.S. demand which jumped by 210.7% with the U.K. also showing a 111.5% increase and Canada a 36.3% rise.

However, exports to the main target market of Japan were down by 17.5%. It's predicted by the end of this year Camu-camu exports will have increased by 79% driven by higher shipments of powdered and dried extracts.

Unlike previous years extracts of fruit pulp, whose main market was Japan, have become less significant.

The main exporters were Inversiones 2A accounting for 41.7 % of exports followed by Natural Peru with 10.5%, Amazon Herb at 7.3% and AgrĆcola San Juan de la AmazonĆa at 6.2%.

The U.S. accounted for 56% of Peru's exports with Canada second at 18.9% followed by the U.K. at 5.3%, Japan at 4.4%, France at 2.9%, Australia at 2.8% and Germany at 2.7%.
