Mexican mango exports rise in 2012

Mexican mango exports rose by 33% year-on-year during the first eight months of 2012, according to the country's Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA).

SAGARPA deputy secretary for food and competitiveness Ernesto Fernandez Arias, said the country shipped 1.452 million metric tons (MT) of the fruit, worth an equivalent of US$215 million.

A government release highlighted the main export destinations as the U.S., Canada, Japan and the Netherlands, while trade activity was also consolidated in the U.K. and Spain during the period.

Fernandez Arias said the key growing states were Guerrero, Nayarit, Sinaloa and Chiapas, while there was good potential in the states of Veracruz, Campeche, San Luis Potosí and Quintana Roo.

The deputy secretary added Mexico's good performance in recent years has made it one of the world's top mango growers, with an average yield of 7MT per hectare.
