Peruvian mandarin exports up by a third
The United Kingdom, Canada and the United States were the top importers of the growing Peruvian citrus industry.
Peruvian mandarin exports rose by 35% year-on-year between January and August this year, totaling a value of US$50 million, website Agraria.pe reported.
A study from the Foreign Trade Society of Peru, COMEXPERU, shows during the same months there has been an average annual growth of 31% for the last three years.
Major destinations for Peruvian mandarin shipments included the U.K., which filled 33.3% of total exports (US$16.6 million), followed by Canada at 21.3% (US$10.6 million) and the U.S. at 19.2% (US$10 million).
Among the major companies exporting this product, the Consorcio de Productores de Fruta S.A. led the ranking for the period with a value of US$20.3 million, followed by Procesadora Larán SAC with US$10.9 million and Compañía de Exportaciones y Negocios Generales (COEXA) with US$2.5 million.

In 2011, exports of fresh and dried mandarins (tangerines and satsumas) totaled US$40.4 million, which represented an increase of 14.7% over 2010 (US$35.2 million).
According to the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture, in 2011 there were 236,282 tons (MT) of mandarins, representing a 47% increase over 2009 output. Also, it is worth noting that land yields have had significant growth of 30% over the period 2009-2012.
