Japan ships first yuzu limes to Europe

Japan has sent its first shipments of yuzu limes to Europe following interest in the fruit from a French chef, website Japandailypress.com reported.

Jerome Banctel was impressed with the limes during a visit to Japan six years ago, giving him recipe ideas for his Paris restaurant Senderens.

The chef started importing yuzu juice and powder four years ago, but his goal for further use was fulfilled this month with the first import of the fresh limes, the story reported.

The largest concentration of the fruit is grown in the Kochi Prefecture, where around 10,000 metric tons (MT) of the fruit is produced each year.

Banctelā€™s interest in yuzu limes coincided with a desire from Kochi officials promote exports, and together they worked on a tasting event in 2011, followed by the necessary phytosanitary procedures to allow imports.

It is expected as much as 10MT of the fruit will be sent to France this year.
