Germany: Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd consider merger

Two of Germany's largest shipping companies, Hapag-Lloyd AG and Hamburg Süd, released a joint statement Tuesday to announce the possibility of a company merger.

Few details were immediately available, although the companies announced they were investigating if and under what conditions a merger might happen.

No further statement could be made beyond the brief media release.

Based on the most recent statistics from each company, the combination would create a possible fleet of around 250 container ships.

Hapag-Lloyd currently employs around 6,900 people while Hamburg Süd employs around 4,400.

The merger would create the fourth largest shipping company in the world behind Maersk, Mediterranean Shipping Company and CMA CGM, Reuters reported. Annual revenue would come in at an estimated US$13 billion.
