Mexican strawberry producers enjoyed a gainful year, selling US$236 million in exports and growing 48% over 2011, Cambio de Michoacán reported.strawberry_69483001

Food and Competitiveness Undersecretary Ricardo Aguilar Castillo commented specifically on the first trimester of 2012, which recorded 52% export volume growth at 127,000 tons (MT).

The overall agricultural year produced 340,000 MT, up from 229,000 in 2011. At the current level, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations ranks Mexico sixth for world strawberry production.

Growth has been attributed to good agricultural practices and smart use of technology.

Main importers of Mexican strawberries include the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Belize and the United Kingdom.

American farmers do a great job growing healthy, safe strawberries we listen to what the consumer wants and go out and produce it BUT we cannot compete against Mexico. Our Government will not allow us to have a level playing field and more and more jobs will move south of the border.American farmers of fresh fruits and vegetables are one of the last major manufacturers left in America and we will go up against anyone but when your own Government doesn’t allow you to controll your costs and regulate you to death the fight will not be fair.Retailers, your customers want fresh American grown strawberries and we have them.
