Indian state promotes urban farming

In the northeastern Indian state of Assam, the local government is making a push to promote rooftop vegetable gardening and increase the availability of fresh products in urban areas.Vegetables_(4700710531)

Agricultural minister Sen Deka promoted the initiative as the first of its type undertaken by a state government, website Post.jagran.com reported.

The program, administered by the Directorate of Horticulture and Food Processing, will begin by offering packages to select citizens in Guwahati and Jorhat, the Indian publication said.

Later the program is expected to expand to other urban areas of the state.

The directorate has reportedly developed its own rooftop gardens and will conduct training workshops to encourage further plantations.
