A grape-rich diet could mean better bone health

Research released this week by the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research indicates that a diet rich in grapes could protect bone health.uvas_80326546

The study released at the organization's annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland points to natural components in grapes as beneficial to maintaining strong bones.

Over eight weeks, a research team at Purdue University tested a grape-rich diet on animals.

The study found that those fed a grape-enriched diet experienced improved bone calcium retention compared to those without grapes. The grape-fed group also demonstrated greater femur cortical thickness and strength.

The study was conducted with a focus on menopause, when many women feel greater effects of bone density loss.

Around 57 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass, according to the research society.
