In the last five years, the surface area of global pineapple plantations has grown 11%. In Colombia, however, growth has stood out, rising 33% over the same time period to 12,565 hectares. The nation now produces over 20 million tons (MT), up 16%.

The Colombian Horticulture Association (ASOHOFRUCOL) told www.freshfruitportal.com that these growth statistics indicate a strong period for the cultivation of this crop.

Last year, the organization said producers and private businesses were able to increase plantings significantly in Cauca Valley and Villavicencio.

The Colombian sector recently underwent analysis at the first Latin American Pineapple Congress in Villavicencio where attendants took a closer look at production alternatives, national and international market opportunities and free trade agreements.

"[The next step] is to work on designing innovative strategies that create added product value. [We also want] to have adequate technical assistance, implementation of good agricultural practices, establishment of national and international certifications and, fundamentally, be able to count on production systems that guarantee product safety," the association said.

According to Colombian Ministry of Agriculture statistics, fresh pineapple exports reached 1,438 MT in 2012. The top markets were the U.S., Belgium and the Netherlands. A great part of production also went toward internal consumption.

Asked about possible new markets, ASOHOFRUCOL said there are excellent opportunities domestically. Free trade agreements established in recent years could also open doors in Canada, the United States and the European Union.
