Indian govt scraps onion export restrictions

The Indian government has responded to grower complaints by removing minimum export price (MEP) restrictions for onions, in a move that is hoped will raise shipments overseas. 
The Times of India reported in December that farmers were protesting against the measure due to falling prices at home, leading Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to call on the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to remove the measure.
But it was more than two months before the ministry's Director General of Foreign Trade, Anup K. Pujari, officially scrapped the MEP this Tuesday.
News agency NDTV reported India grew 17-18 million metric tons (MT) of the bulbous vegetable.
