According to a company release, Banabay is expecting 100,000 organic and ethically-produced bananas from plantations in Ecuador to meet the growing demand for organic produce amongst British consumers.

The supply expansion comes after the grower-distributor announced plans to introduce pineapples to its tropical fruit portfolio earlier this year.

Business development manager Harley Williams says the company investigated potential demand in the U.K. market for organic bananas during Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February.

"We felt the time was right for us to add to the range of products we supply into the U.K., where there is a real appetite for organic produce," Williams says in the release.

"Once we have bedded in the new line, we expect other countries in Europe to follow suit."

The addition of organic bananas comes less than two years after Banabay first started out with just a single container shipment of Cavendish into the U.K., which has now increased to more than 50 containers to an average of 10 countries worldwide.

BanaBay claims its ethically-operated farms have been a family-owned source of production for more than 30 years. Some plantations are Soil Association Certified, growing without the use of chemicals or pesticides.
