Bollywood movie star and leading Indian television personality Amitabh Bachchan has officially been appointed brand ambassador for Maharashtra state's horticulture sector.

The 71-year-old star of more than 180 Indian films announced his appointment via his Twitter account over the weekend.

"Horticulture Ministry makes me brand ambassador for fruit products .. Jitendra Awhad minister promotes," he said in a Twitter post.

"I never knew Maharashtra was the No.1 state in fruit production of many varieties… happy promoting it for horticulture ministry."

Alongside the posts are pictures of Bachchan in traditional Marathi (of Maharashtra state) attire with mangoes and a basket of fruit.

After a career spanning more than four decades, the veteran actor made his Hollywood debut last year playing a character in The Great Gatsby alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

He also currently stars in the Indian TV mini series Yudh that is being aired in the country until next month.

At www.freshfruitportal.com we spoke with an official from the state's Department for Horticulture who said the actor was one of the most recognizable faces in India and will do 'great promotional work' for the fruit of Maharashtra.

"Everyone is very pleased to have such a credible face representing horticulture for Maharashtra state where we have such great fruit that should be shared all over India and other countries," he said.

"There is a very exciting buzz about Bachchan because everyone knows him; from the older generation of India right down to the young ones, he is such a big celebrity and a person that everyone recognizes. He has been in so many movies.

"I'm sure he’ll do a fantastic job as an ambassador for our fruit."
