Peruvian state health insurer touts physalis benefits

Peru's government-backed social health insurance organization EsSalud has recommended consumption of the native fruit physalis, due to its antioxidant benefits that can help minimize cellular aging. physalis_61536349 sq 1

A representative of the insurer said the fruit -  also known as the Cape gooseberry, goldenberry, Inka berry, aguaymanto and uchuva - also helps fight high blood pressure, stress and anxiety while stabilizing glucose levels in the blood.

For these reasons, EsSalud complementary medicine director Dr. Martha Villar López said the fruit was particularly helpful for people with diabetes.

"The aguaymanto is a wonder that nature offers us as a fruit that provides many health benefits, which is why it is recommended to consume it regularly," she said.

She said the fruit's high levels of Vitamin A and Vitamin C also strengthened the immune system, helping to prevent respiratory diseases.

She added physalis also served those with urinary problems due to its antibiotic and diuretic properties, with its flavonoids making it a natural tranquilizer

Finally, she concluded the fruit's protein and phosphorus levels were exceptionally high for fruit, adding it could be consumed fresh, in a dessert or as a snack.
