U.S.: PortMiami opens container restack facility

PortMiami has announced its container restack facility is now open for business, allowing users to unload, manipulate and restack cargo in preparation for fumigation or inspection.

A release said the facility was fully approved by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the manipulation of highly mobile pest and reconditioning, and was operated by Eller-ITO. PortMiami restack facility

The new transfer facility measures more than 960 square feet and is located adjacent to the current USDA PortMiami fumigation yard.

It is equipped with 10 metric ton (MT) refrigeration unit to maintain the temperature below 60Ā°F (15.5Ā°C), as required by the USDA.

Port director Juan Kuryla said he hoped the restack facility would provide a more efficient process to clients.

"We are pleased to announce the opening of this facility, which provides our customers with new options to trans load and manipulate goods, saving them time and money," Kuryla said.

"Customers can now have all their goods offloaded, fumigated, inspected and released to their customers faster and at a reduced cost."

PortMiami describes itself as the 'perishables gateway' to the Americas, and said the construction of this facility was in direct response to industry needs.
