McDonald's supplier gets USDA approval for GM potato

A genetically modified potato that is less prone to bruising and contains fewer harmful chemicals has been approved for commercial planting by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).Ā potatoes_59901256 small

The potato developed by Idaho-based J.R. Simplot Company has been altered to produce less of a chemical called acrylamide - considered to be a cancerous carcinogen - when it is deep fried.

Simplot, which is a major supplier of french fries and other potato products to McDonald's, firstĀ sent its petition to the USDA for approval back in May 2013.

The new Innate-branded potato will be the first GM potato used in the U.S. in around 10 years. In the early 2000's a GM potato developed by Monsanto Co. was taken off the market after receiving poor consumer interest.

The USDA said its determination was based on its evaluation of data submitted by Simplot petitioning for a nonregulated status, its analysis of available scientific data, and comments received from public.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still is yet to determine whether the potato is safe for human consumption, but Simplot is reported to be expecting a positive response by the end of the month.

The fact the potato has been specifically engineered for lower acrylamide potential means is it among the first GM crops to offer a direct benefit to consumers.Ā Many other GM crops like wheat or maize are developed to be produced more easily, such as by increasing pesticide resistence or improving yields.

When contacted by www.freshfruitportal.com, McDonald's said it was not considering using the GM potato in its restaurants.

"McDonald's USA does not source GMO potatoes nor do we have current plans to change our sourcing practice," the statement said.
