Strong winds hit up to a third of Canary Islands' banana crops

Strong winds in parts of the Canary Islands last weekend damaged a significant amount of crops, news website Eldia.es reported.Ā banana_56521780 1

Almost 4,500 plantations on the archipelago off the southern Moroccan coast were reportedly affected, which represent around 30% of the island's total production.

The story said that all of the growers were covered by insurance.

According to data collected by the Association of Banana Producers of the Canaries (ASPROCAN), La Palma was the most severely affected island, with only minor reports of damages in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The powerful winds were said to have brought down many of the plants - especially those which still had unharvested bananas on them - and severely damaged other plants still in development.

Banana crops in the Canary Islands are one of the few agricultural items in Spain whose producers are all covered by an umbrella insurance, Eldia.es reported.
