Peruvian artichoke shipments see solid growth

Peruvian artichoke shipments between January and September grew by 11% year-on-year to reach US$55.2 million, website Agraria.pe reported. artichokes_68018800 small

The story quoted Peru's Association of Exporters (ADEX) manager Giannina Denegri as saying the increase was largely due to a better positioning in the U.S. market thanks to the vegetable's quality and price.

Denegri added there were opportunities to export artichoke to many others parts of the world, including Canada, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and more locations in the EU.

The publication reported that between January and September this year, Peruvian artichokes were shipped to 25 different countries. The U.S. was the largest market, with exports valued at US$36.3 million, representing a 36.5% year-on-year rise.

The next largest destinations were Spain and France, with US$8.5 million and US$4.8 million respectively.

Agraria.pe said the Peruvian artichoke industry had undergone some problems recently, largely relating to growers replanting their farmland for more profitable crops.
