The licensing deal was reached with Verona-based producer Bovo Angelo di Giuseppe e F.lli to sell the new Boerica variety.

"This agreement aims to improve the management of this variety along the whole production chain while also contributing to its improved development," Bovo Angelo's Valentino Bovo - who owns the variety - said in a release.

Jingold also recently acquired the rights to sell three other new kiwifruit varieties - the yellow-fleshed Jinyen, the green-fleshed Z5Z6 and the red-fleshed Oriental Red.

Boerica is reported to already be in commercial production.

"Our organization has a proven experience in the management of new and patented kiwifruit varieties, and we are excited to have another one available, Boerica, which represents a good opportunity in for Italian kiwifruit production," Jingold president Patrizio Neri said.

A press release from Jingold said the Boerica was distinguishable from the Hayward for its bright green color of the flesh, the more elongated shape and the larger size.

Storage trials are said to have demonstrated positive results, suggesting the Boerica is well suited to be shipped to overseas markets in which Jingold-branded fruit has been performing well in the past few years.

"The Boerica variety has achieved a good spread across the country and many growers have been able to appreciate its distinctive features," Bovo said.

"With this partnership we hope to really add value to the fruit, focusing on decidedly better recognition for the fruit among clients and consumers by combining Boerica with the Jingold brand."
