Peruvian strawberry shipments surged 30% year-on-year to reach US$14 million from January to October, according to figures released by the Peruvian Association of Exporters (ADEX). strawberry_62221615 small

The group attributed the rise to growing demand in the U.S., Canada and Japan, and greater production.

"Peruvian production is increasing, but it is still only a little when we keep its demand in mind. Strawberries are one of the products with great prospects for growth in our country," ADEX agricultural manager Giannina Denegri Baiocchi said in a monthly bulletin, adding most of the fruit sold was frozen.

While Peru has a suitable climate for strawberry production, Denegri said there was still a lack of adequate technology to improve the fruit's production and export.

Denegri Baiocchi said the Andean nation only accounted for 2% of the world's frozen strawberry imports, but the crop's high profitability made it attractive for any businessperson.

"It is just getting started, but to position yourelf well you have to send products of top quality according to client demands," she said.

The main production areas for Peruvian strawberries are Lima, La Libertad and Ica, while the U.S. is the purchaser with around US$5 million worth of fruit bought in the first 10 months of 2014, representing a 124% year-on-year jump.

The second-largest importer is Canada with US$1.7 million, followed by Japan (US$1.6 million), Brazil (US$1.2 million) and China (US$1.1 million).
