Argentina: Union strikes postponed as talks with CAFI continue

A threat of strike action by an Argentine union representing farm workers has been put for rest for now, as negotiations over pay are due to continue with the Chamber of Integrated Fruit Growers (CAFI), website Rionegro.com.ar reported. peras-rojas_51031324 small

Strike action had reportedly been planned by the Argentine Union of Rural Workers and Longshoremen (UATRE) that would mainly affect pear harvests in the southern Patagonia region if a resolution could not be found on Wednesday.

However, the story reported that the deadline has now been pushed back till the end of today (Thursday).

UATRE is demanding a pay increase for its workers of at least 40%, while CAFI was said to be offering around 22%.

UATRE institutional relations secretary Carlos Figueroa earlier told www.freshfruitportal.com that it seemed progress was being made in the talks, and union heads would likely settle for an increase of 35%.
