In a release, Waitrose said organic Seville oranges would be available in store until the end of February, so jam-makers had a short window to purchase the bitter fruit.

"Seville oranges are beautifully sharp, and famous for making the best marmalade," Waitrose fresh fruit buyer Tim Stevens said.

"Waitrose organic Seville oranges are grown without the use of pesticides, meaning their rind is ideal for adding into a homemade thick cut marmalade.

"It's great news that more people than ever are discovering the joy of making marmalade at home."

In addition, Waitrose attributed the U.K.'s marmalade-making revival to the recent film release of the famous children's story Paddington Bear; a well-loved animated character who eats marmalade sandwiches.

The retailer claimed downloads for its quick and easy Seville marmalade had increased 282% as a result.
