China: Free trade port approval brings spicy Sichuan opportunities to foreign exporters

The central Chinese city of Chongqing is now in a position to better diversify the food on offer to its almost 30 million inhabitants, after the national government approved its status as a newly designated free trade port for imported produce and meat. Chongqing free trade area

The Chongqing Free Trade Port Area's (CFTA) approval by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) will also the import fruit industry reach a total of more than 80 million people in the province of Sichuan, and more than 250 million within an estimated economic radius

Chongqing Free Trade Port Area Development & Management Co public relations head Chen Weiyuan told www.freshfruitportal.com the CFTA has attracted a considerable amount of firms in several industries, including international businesses, since it opened in December.

The infrastructure development of the area was completed following the principle of unified planning and integrated construction,Ā  covering a total area of 6,194.6 square meters (66,678.1 square feet), with a green belt of 182.2 square meters (1,961.1 square feet).

Backed by preferential tax policies provided by the local government of the Liangjiang New Area, the CFTA has also leveraged its favorable geographic location and high industry concentration to attract various firms to register and settle in the zone. Among these companies, more than 30 wereĀ agribusiness firms hailing from Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and other regions.

Business representatives of government agencies from countries and regions such as Hungary, Canada and California have also been in touch with CFTA officials and are exploring potential opportunities for cooperation.
