Uber teams up with Xianfeng for Chinese fruit discount service

A Chinese company has collaborated with app-based transportation group Uber to promote fruit sales in one of the country's wealthiest cities, Hangzhou. Uber and Xianfeng

Xianfeng Fruits - a subsidiary of retailer Hangzhou Qunfeng Fruit Chain Co - launched the platform on Feb. 17 in the lead up to Chinese New Year, offering residents a "Fruit + Ride" coupon program.

"If you follow Uber Hangzhou's WeChat account and type in 'Xianfeng Fruit', then you are the winner of a CNY50 (US$7.99) Uber coupon. More coupons for fruit at Xianfeng are available after completing a trip ordered through Uber," Xianfeng's business director Fu Xuejiao told www.freshfruitportal.com, adding that shoppers to one of the parent company's 200 plus store fronts will get a discounted Uber trip home after any purchase.

"We share a commitment to serve the local community; that is the basis of our collaboration."

Uber has expanded its reach across China very quickly but only entered the Hangzhou market recently, where e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba's headquarters is also located.

"Uber has been here in Hangzhou for about four months now. It's eager to extend its influence in the city through funding various promotional campaigns, which is the basis for all the coupons available for customers.

"And in Hangzhou, fresh fruits have long been among the top goods on the local people's New Year shopping lists. So here we are, promoting Uber with Xianfeng's fresh fruits. Isn't it nice when you can get an Uber at a discounted rate for the ride home, after shopping for some of your favorite fruits at Xianfeng?"

An expiration date has yet to be set by the "fruit + ride" organizers, but the scheme is only a part of the Xianfeng-Uber partnership in Hangzhou. The companies are weighing up the possibility of free fruit tasting in Uber cars during the coming Spring Festival season.

"The preliminary plan is that 60% of the free fruit samples will be imported fruit," Xianfeng co-founder and marketing director Wan Hua told www.freshfruitportal.com.

"Uber does the best job in bringing us the easy and comfortable riding experience, and this goes perfectly with what we do here at Xianfeng: we strive to bring the most delicious and freshest fruit to everyone's dinner table."
