U.S.: Chiquita forced to stay longer at Gulfport

Port congestion in New Orleans has delayed the completion of a logistics change for the recently-privatized Chiquita Brands International. Port of Gulfport

Website Sunherald.com reported the Brazilian-owned company's containers were still moving through Gulfport even though they were supposed to be cleared by Dec. 31.

"We received a call from them to provide them assistance and we've been working with them during the past month on handling paper for southbound shipments," state port director Jonathan Daniels was quoted as saying.

"We expected when they left here that all cargo and activities would cease at the port. We're continuing to work with them to alleviate congestion issues at the port of New Orleans with their paper."

The New Orleans port's director of external affairs, Matt Gresham, told the publication Chiquita's transition to New Orelands was on schedule, with some cargo expected to move through Gulfport while terminal improvements were completed in the multinational's new transport hub.
