Mexico: Jalisco avocado growers feeling ready for U.S. exports

Speaking with website Informador.com.mx, Jalisco Avocado Grower and Exporter Association (Apeajal) director Ignacio Gómez said the U.S. simply did not have enough avocado supply to keep up with the fruit's fast-growing popularity.

He told the publication that if there were no objections, export approval could come for Jalisco growers within 100-120 days.

He said that to reach this stage growers have had to work on getting their orchards certified as free of phytosanitary pests, and while he did not know the exact amount of growers who could make the most of the opportunity, it was estimated to be between 50-100 before growing further in 2016.

"We don't believe there will be resistance (on the part of the United States industry) because they have also had several unofficial negotiations with avocado industry members in the United States so they could see how Jalisco was working, and the current situation in municipalities certified as [quarantine pest] free with all the work in health, safety, hygiene, traceability; everything they require and that we already have in Jaliso," Gómez was quoted as saying.
