Melons from Portuguese island receive granted protected status from EU

Melons produced on Santa Maria island in the Portuguese archipelago of the AzoresĀ have been granted a Protected Geographical Indications (PGI) by the European Commission.Ā Apfel_gala

Portugal's application to register the name 'Meloa de Santa Maria ā€“ AƧores' was recently published in theĀ Official Journal of the European Union.

The fruit is characterized by its sweet taste, its juiciness, and high vitamin C content in comparison to common melons.

The PGIĀ covers agricultural products and foodstuffs closely linked to the geographical area.Ā At least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation must take place in the area.

'Meloa de Santa Maria ā€“ AƧores' joins a list of some 1,200 products currently registered in the EU.
