A protocol reached with China now only needs to be signed by phytosanitary authorities from both nations, with Peru's Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MINAGRI) highlighting the possibility of inaugural exports in March or April.

Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) agreed to a work plan set out by the Peruvian Hass avocado industry, starting off the process of lifting restrictions on the fruit.

In a release, Peruvian Agriculture Minister Juan Manuel Benites said the opening of the two markets would raise annual avocado exports by US$50 million.

Peru is the world's second-largest exporter of avocados after Mexico.
