Germany: €20M of cocaine found in banana shipment

Some 300 kilograms of cocaine have been found in Germany in a banana shipment that had come from South America, according to website Bz-berlin.de. banana_66284746 small

The discovery was reportedly made by accident by a banana ripening staff member at a fruit and vegetable market in the southwestern state of Saarland.

The drugs were said to have a street value of around €20 million (US$21.4 million), and had arrived in Germany via the Dutch port of Rotterdam.

The drugs were wrapped in plastic film and were concealed below the bananas, according to Bz-berlin.de.

German police reportedly confirmed the discovery but would not provide any further details for tactical reasons.

In January last year, Aldi supermarket employees in seven Berlin stores found cocaine hidden in boxes of bananas, with the street value claimed to be in the order of €6 million (US$8.17 million).
