Mexico: New avocado export system better serves industry, says APEAM

The Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Mexico (APEAM) has responded positively to a recent decision by the Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) to enact rules that prevent potential monopolistic activity. avocado_905998 _ small

In a statement given to www.freshfruitportal.com, APEAM said it was pleased COFECE proceedings had been resolved with no penalties or sanctions imposed.

"Currently, APEAM is the sole contractor with USDA-APHIS for its technical, pre-clearance programs involving Mexican avocados. Therefore, local packers wanting to export to the USA had to become members of APEAM," the statement said.

"Traditionally, membership has included shared support and funding of all APEAM programs (promotion, research, food safety), which the majority of packers have valued and supported given the positive results in category growth and consumer demand."

The statement said that under the new agreement with COFECE, APEAM would offer new packers two options: become full members with the benefits of all APEAM programs and services, or pay only for USDA-APHIS services.

"By providing both options, APEAM will be better able to serve our industry and maintain a strong international export program," the statement said.
