Website Rcnradio.com reported the winds occurred early last week in the Urabá region, close to the border with Panama, and farm owners were working to assess the damage and economic losses.

At least 60 homes were also damaged in the winds and some people were reported to have been injured, the story said.

Authorities declared an emergency situation in the region following a prolonged period of heavy rains and winds.

Strong winds are not uncommon in the region. Last July around 4,500 hectares of banana plantations were destroyed by severe weather, resulting in the loss of five million boxes of fruit.
