Kiwi waste could be used to make bioplastic spoons

New Zealand research institute Scion is investigating patent opportunities for a technology that turns kiwifruit waste into kitchen utensils, reported website biotechlearn.org.nz.

The Rotorua-based institute has been working on the project for 10 years, with a process that breaks down kiwifruit waste into bioplastics to make combined spoon and knife utensils called ā€˜spifesā€™, the story reported.

The story said one 90g (3.17oz) piece of fruit has the capacity to make more than 100 utensils, which will be included in Zespri kiwifruit packages.

It is expected that bioplastic demand will grow 20-fold in the coming decade, the story reported.
