Chinese ag minister visits Mexican berry and avocado farms

Mexico is hoping its agricultural trade with China will be given a lift, after two top officials from the Asian giant's produce sector toured various facilities in the Latin American country.Ā assorted-berries_1111404 small

China's Minister of Agriculture Han Changfu and Minister of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) Zhi Shuping were hosted by Mexico's Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA).

As part of the trip, which included a visit to a tequila-producing area, the delegation was taken to berry and avocado farms in order to verify production standards.

The group toured facilitiesĀ owned by U.S.-headquartered Driscoll's, including farms and packhouses where fruits raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries are produced for export markets.

A trip was also made to an organic raspberry and blackberry production site, which complies with all the requirements and control standards to ship to the Chinese market.

The state of Jalisco is the largest berry producer in the country, with more than 800 hectares of farmland.

SAGARPA's JosƩ Calzada Rovirosa said the visit was a great opportunity for the Chinese delegation to get to know the Mexican industry and verify the quality of its production methods.
